About me

Woman hanging from rope between two rock spires

Welcome to Clueless in KL, a travelogue about exploration, adventure and life in Malaysia and beyond!

I'm PK, a Canadian Brit who recently washed up on Malaysia's sunny shores. I'm no stranger to expat life, having lived in six countries and three continents - but this new chapter feels different.

For one thing, it's a journey into the past. My family is originally from Malaysia, part of the large Chinese diaspora which settled here over the centuries.

The move also coincided with a shift within myself. I wanted to live more authentically, connect with a community, write that novel I was always thinking about.

Malaysia, it turns out, was just the ticket. I feel cared for by the people I've met, even as I adjust to their plainspoken directness. I'm challenged by the deeply complex culture and society, where nothing is as it seems. I've developed an identity crisis that's transforming how I think about myself. And through it all, I've rediscovered how to laugh and love, and uncorked a wellspring of creativity I didn't know I had.

This is the side of Malaysia I want to share with you, the side that gets under your skin, that takes you by surprise. There'll be plenty of practical tips, guides and how to's, but this travelogue is above all about stories. Connecting through the lens of history, people, culture - and yes, inner biases, hopes and fears. Sharing the spirit of adventure - and new ways to look at ordinary things.

So pour yourself a whisky by the fireplace - or a lemonade on the veranda - and take a moment. Whether you're a newbie to this part of the world, an old hand who wants to see it from a different perspective or a local who'd like to hear about expat experiences, I hope you enjoy these stories!
